Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) home based businesses have very little to do with the selling of products. The very reason they are called MLMs is that those levels are what makes all the difference. The difficulty with MLM schemes and home based businesses is the building of as big of a downline as possible. Downline members are basically people who you refer to become part of the MLM sales team below you. These members then have to do the same, with more members in their downline, and each member in the downline at that level have to keep doing this before profits really begin to look like profits.

One way to find prospective downline members (or recruits) is lead generation. This is not as simple as it sounds and needs some amount of planning. Naturally, it is not going to be as easy as people seeing the advertisements about your home based businesses, its products and getting excited enough to sign up instantly. There are millions of MLM home based businesses out there with the same products and payouts. Most people considering joining an MLM scheme will have questions. At the very least, you should be able to answer all of these questions without repeatedly emailing backlinks to a FAQ page. To that end, you must familiarize yourself as much as possible with the MLM distributor, the products, and the compensation plan.

You have to have a comfort level with the knowledge about your own home based business so that when you talk to people it shows through. You might generate a ton of leads but if your answer is not satisfactory, chances are you will not convert most of those leads. Some sort of appointment calendar or planner should also be kept diligently so that follow-ups are not missed. It can take several callbacks before people will be willing to invest in your MLM home based business. You are basically selling, and selling can take convincing many times over.

So once, you know everything about your MLM home based business and you have the few basic sales tools in place it is time to start generating leads. To begin with, make a list of everyone you know, friends, acquaintances, relatives, anyone with a computer and an internet connection that could be a prospect. Start with these people. If you make mistakes in your sales pitch, they will forgive you and since their answers will be more candid, this will make good practice for later on. One important thing to do upon discovering that someone is not interested in your MLM business is to ask him or her for a few names of people who might be. This way you can build a healthy network of contacts. Sometimes they may hesitate to give you the names, so just ask politely for only the names of the people they feel they can give you without any trouble.

Start collecting business cards, email addresses, and phone numbers. This is for the purpose of making cold calls because you never really know who might be interested. Cold calling is one of the most difficult things to do for any fresh salesperson. It might be uncomfortable in the beginning but keep at it. All it needs is confidence. There is no trick to it. Then there are the MLM trade journals, another good lead generation source for home based businesses. People considering MLMs are already reading these journals. Sometimes it is a nice touch to include a press release, along with your advertisement. Naturally, the first rule of advertising is that your ad should be unlike all the others in order to get attention.

Most affiliate programs will have a hidden cost for those who don’t know better. That is the purchasing of MLM leads. The trouble is there are probably dozens of people out there with the same leads and the competition gets tougher. A lot of companies will have a list of emails and phone numbers for people who in the past might have shown interest in MLM opportunities. Purchasing leads for MLM home based businesses is finally a matter of how good you are at converting those leads.

There are a lot of people out there and a lot of websites that are in the business of nothing but selling leads. Therefore, before buying leads for a MLM home based business make sure that the leads are relevant and that a genuine company of good repute is providing them. A list of emails and names can be sold many times over, make sure you are getting fresh leads only. Do some background research on the company selling leads. The Do Not Call registry has phone numbers that you should not buy. Checking for those numbers is up to you. The company selling you the numbers is not required to do this.

1. Fresh leads is a must for your internet business! Today running an mlm business is much different than it was several years ago. This is directly due to the World Wide Web. Now people who had challenges in recruiting individuals into their business model (some never sponsor even one person) are building downlines they could have never thought possible before utilizing the Internet.

This is true because the Internet offers a never-ending supply of fresh leads to your business if you do it right. So the first thing you are looking for in an mlm lead is how fresh is it.

2. Do not buy old leads. If you want fresh leads, what good will it do you to buy leads that are 60-90 days old or even older? These are just recycled names that an mlm lead company is most likely selling once again in order to make money. These people have been contacted over and over, most of which are tired of receiving “sales” calls! Unless you are a phone pro working mlm leads via a telephone is a waste of your time.

3. Get your own leads. This is the best way to build a prospect list of your own through the Internet. Not necessarily by writing down the names of everyone you know. If you have been in previous mlm network marketing businesses you may have already contacted all of your friends and family. You are better off to use the Internet to build a never-ending supply of fresh mlm leads.

4. Do not use the replicated website as your “only” source your mlm company gives you. It is virtually the same one everyone else is using, just with your name on it. You are better off to host a one page landing page where your give away a free report in exchange for your visitors name and email address.

Have that contact info lead into an Autoresponder where you follow up by email over and over, dripping information about the business opportunity (or products and services) in general. As you build up more trust, begin to offer additional incentives and or bonuses that you and/or your mlm marketing company has as a solution to their situation.

Getting your own mlm leads is the best way to do it and you will never run out of people to contact, due to millions of people come online everyday looking for ways to make money and someone to help them do it.

Ok, so you got yourself some MLM leads.

I’m gonna take a wild stab and assume these are supposed to be some type of business opportunity-seeking MLM leads, right? (These are some of the most common out there.)

You probably paid several dollars per lead. Some of you may have even opted for the more expensive ‘opt-in’ or even the super-expensive ‘double opt-in, phone verified’ opportunity-seeking MLM leads, with extra whip cream, sprinkles and a cherry on top.

You started dialing with anticipation and excitement…knowing you were only a mere phone number away from sponsoring that next serious business builder who was going to take you to new heights in the Network Marketing arena.

And, so, you dialed… and you dialed… and you dialed…

After about 50 or so people hanging up on you, telling you they weren’t interested, or asking how you got their number and to stop calling and take them off your list, you decided, “Wow, these leads stink! I gotta find some better leads.”

I get emails all the time from people asking where to find good MLM leads.

I’m going to reveal the biggest and best-kept secret on all leads. Are you ready?

ALL leads stink!

In other words, there is no “magic” MLM lead that you are going to call up and have people suddenly dying to jump into your MLM business, I don’t care what the person who sold you the leads told you. (They’re on commission.) Honestly, some of these people who sell leads are trying to give you the impression that these leads are just waiting by the phone in anticipation for your call.

Sorry to disappoint you, folks… they’re not.

And the cold reality is, if there actually were MLM leads like this… you’d NEVER see them. People like myself and other MLM industry leaders would buy every last one of them in a split second! You can count on that!

So, then, why buy MLM leads at all if they all stink? MLM leads are the life blood of your MLM business, and, without them, your MLM business will be nowhere. What’s important is knowing the source of the MLM lead before even picking up the phone will make all the difference in the world whether you close that prospect or not.

Let me explain… First of all, “opportunity seeker” leads are a sham, in my humble opinion. Too often, these types of MLM leads are generated because someone clicked on a banner ad that said, “Win a free iPod or Dell computer” – or “Click the monkey, then just fill out this form.” (We’ve all seen these crazy ads.) And, then they’re on your list. Sure, this person may be looking for an “opportunity,” but for WHAT is my question. Not exactly my idea of a “serious MLM business builder.”

CONSIDER: If I bumped into Bill Gates (the wealthiest Billionaire alive) and told him I could show him how to double his money, he’d give me 30 seconds of his time.

Also, if Bill Gates would be interested in making more money, surely wouldn’t everyone else on the planet be interested in making more money, too? Of course. You are, and so am I, and so is your best friend. So, to find people who are looking for an opportunity to make more money…look no further than your White Pages and start dialing.

Now, is this a smart idea? No. Why? Because we have all been pounded with “money-making” schemes all our lives and we’re sick of them. That, aside from risking dialing numbers on the Do Not Call list. For 100 reasons, do not start dialing through your White Pages…please!

You have to know “what did these people do to get on this list?” Also, knowing “how long ago” they did it helps, too. Many lists have been circulating around for years. Again, this can often be a good thing, depending on what you’re marketing.

“So, Mike, if ‘opportunity-seeking’ MLM leads are no good, where do I find good prospects for my MLM business?”

That’s an excellent question… I’m glad you asked!

The trick is to approach people with your business from the standpoint of the value and benefit of what the business has to offer. Then, find lead lists of people who have expressed interest in a similar area.

For example, let’s say your MLM company sells nutritional products. This is health & wellness. So, you might get a list of people who are interested in becoming more healthy, such as buying a list of gym memberships or people who bought exercise equipment or maybe people who signed up for Yoga classes, etc.

It doesn’t have to be very recent. Someone who got a gym membership 3 years ago and dropped out 2 months later is a GREAT lead. Consider that person’s lifestyle: they wanted to get more healthy, but didn’t have the TIME to go to the gym. And you know, just like the rest of us, that person has been telling themselves for the past 3 years, “I gotta make time to go back to the gym – I gotta get in shape – I gotta get more healthy.”

Do you see where I’m going with this?

Suddenly, out of the blue, YOU call them up and reveal the amazing value and benefits of your nutritional product and say, “Jane, if I could show you how to be more healthy with just an extra 30 seconds a day…”

You will be amazed at the response you’ll get. When you do this right, not only will you never hear the words “I’M NOT INTERESTED,” but you’ll also close a LOT more business.

It’s not rocket science… healthy people are always looking for more ways to become more healthy, aren’t they? Whereas, unhealthy people aren’t looking for ways to become more healthy. So, you have to think, “Which of these two groups is more likely to buy my nutritional product?”

So, go out and find the people who are already looking and give them what they’re already looking for and stop trying to convince people who aren’t looking. It’s too hard.

Of course we’re all looking for an opportunity for something better. That’s a given! Your job is to figure out if the opportunity is right for them…based on their needs or wants. (And not trying to convince them it’s right for them based on YOUR needs.)

So, now, hopefully you can see how knowing the SOURCE of your MLM leads can turn frustrations into easy profits.
